High-Resolution Numerical Simulation Study of the Energy Output Characteristics of Aluminized Explosives in Deep-Water Explosion

Abstract: The explosion of aluminized explosives in deep-water is different from that of ideal explosives. The high hydrostatic pressure will affect the reaction rate of aluminum powder’s secondary combustion and then affect the process of energy release. The explosion energy output characteristics of CL-20-based aluminized explosives in the range of 100~3000 m water depth gradient were studied, using third-order MUSCL finite volume method combined with the Miller energy release model. The results show that the shock wave energy decreases with the increase of water depth; the secondary reaction time of aluminum powder in CL-20-based aluminized explosives exceeds that in the bubble period when the depth of water exceeds 200 m, the energy released from the reaction of aluminum powder in the first pulsating period is not enough, which leads to the fact that the bubble energy from the bubble cycle formula is smaller, the bubble energy decreases with the increase of water depth, and the total explosion energy is not constant.
