Numerical Simulation of Chemical Submunition Payload Damage Effects Impact by High Velocity Penetrator

Abstract: The damage effects and dynamic behavior of chemical submunition payloads impacted by explosively formed high velocity penetrator were simulated by AUTODYN-3D code. The numerical results show that, when impacted by the high velocity penetrator, four typical states of intact, dented without leakage, ruptured with partial leakage and smashed/dustruction were produced for the typical payload with three tiers of chemical submunition. The distribution of these four states strongly depends on the impact position, and shows a complex multi-interval varying trend. The further dynamic analysis shows that directly hitting along the trajectory of high velocity penetrator is the dominant mechanism which causes the smashed damage to the chemical submunitions. Moreover, the leaked fluid ejection of the smashed chemical submunitions will cause an additional smashed and ruptured damage to the chemical submunitions. Additionally, the collisions among neighboring submunitions play important roles on the dented and ruptured damage to the chemical submunitions.
