Dynamic Mechanical Behavior and Damage Effect of Ice Under Various Strain Rates

  • To understand the dynamic mechanical characteristic of ice under various strain rates, the compressive experiments of ice specimen under different strain rates(10<sup<-2</sup<~10<sup<-4</sup< s<sup<-1</sup<) were conducted by using the technique of quasi-static compression at -20℃. The results show that the compressive strength of ice specimen varies from 8.44 MPa to 40.7 MPa. The strain rate effect of ice compressive strength was studied, and a phenomenological expression between the compressive strength and the strain rate was further presented. The modified pressure and strain rate dependent dynamic constitutive model of ice can describe the failure behavior of ice under high strain rate based on the experimental results. The model was implemented in Ls-Dyna, and the damage process produced by ice impact on the aluminum alloy target was simulated further.
