Penetration of Semi-Infinite Thick Armored Steel Target by Two Kinds of Long Rods

  • The sea 37 mm ballistic gun was used to launch the subcalibertungsten alloy and tungsten fiber reinforced amorphous composite long rods to penetration armored steel target with high speed.A 3D nonlinear dynamic finite element program ANSYS LS-DYNA was applied to simulate these processes. The effects of the material property and velocity of projectile on the penetration performance and the damage mechanism were analyzed. The penetration performance of tungsten fiber reinforced amorphous composite long rod performs better than tungsten alloy penetrator experimentally and numerically. Experimental results show that self-sharpening phenomenon occurred during the process of tungsten fiber reinforced amorphous composite long rod penetration armored steel target, while mushroom head formed for tungsten alloy long rod; Simulation results suggest that the damage mode changes with penetration velocity.
