Experimental and Numerical Study of Damage Characteristics for Ring-Stiffened Cylinder Subjected to Underwater Explosion

  • According to the characteristics of the torpedo compartment shell, a model of ring-stiffened cylinder with counterweights at each end was designed. The experimental study was carried out on damage characteristics of this model, and numerical simulation of the experiment was carried out with the Autodyn software. The result shows that cylinders have two kinds of damage form in different explosion distance, plastic deformation and structural fracture; the bubble's floating changes the initial direction of the second pressure wave and causes the non symmetric failure of cylinder in the horizontal orientation. When the explosion distance is small, the shock wave causes partial concave or fracture, and the second pressure wave cause the whole distortion of shell. By comparing numerical results with experimental results, it is proved that this simulation model can describe the response of cylindrical shells subjected to shock wave.
