On Contemporary History Annotations in Shi Rong's Shan Gu Wai JI Shi Zhu

In Shi Rong's Shan Gu Wai JI Shi Zhu, he used the method named“demonstrating meanings of poems by history” to explain Huang Tinjian's poems, which continued the excellent tradition of“annotating Song poems by Song scholars”. Shi Rong chronologized poems by Huang Tinjian's career, and put Huang Tinjian's biographical chronology behind the poems. In this way, he also corrected the mistakes of chronicle in Huang Xun's Shan Gu Nian Pu. Furthermore, Shi Rong quoted various authentic historical materials, and did reference checking for the political backdrop of these poems in order to clarify their meanings. He emphatically interpreted some poems related with contemporary history, especially those that applied figurative languages and allusions.
