On the Understanding of English Metaphor and its Relation to Cognition

This paper examines the metaphor features of the English language and is relation to recognition from the perspective of cognitive science and cognitive linguistics. The understanding of metaphor in English comes from first the identification of the technique and then the deduction of its meaning. The context in which the metaphor is used plays an important role in the identification and understanding of metaphor. The language of metaphor is not a violation of conversational principles, nor is it supposed in the view of pragmatics scholars, who believe the literal understanding of the metaphor comes first and then comes a deduction of the metaphor based on context if the explanation of the literal meaning turns out to be abnormal.
