Study on Impact Response and Parameter Sensitivity of UHMWPE Belt-Net for Ammunition Interception

  • To improve the active protection capability and battlefield survivability of armored vehicles, this study proposes a "triggered detonation" method that utilizes a high-strength and high-toughness ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) belt-net to resist ammunition impact and activate the fuze in advance. Static tests of the UHMWPE belt-net intercepting typical ammunition were carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the triggered detonation principle. A numerical model of the UHMWPE belt-net was established, and the simulation results were in good agreement with the test results: the peak overload of the projectile head reached 320 g, which met the fuze triggering condition; the relative error of the maximum break length of the UHMWPE belt-net was only 4.76%. Through parametric simulations and orthogonal tests, the influence of projectile parameters on the detonation performance of the UHMWPE belt-net was analyzed. The results indicated that the detonation performance of the UHMWPE belt-net improved with the increase of projectile diameter and velocity, but decreased with the increase of projectile mass; the projectile impact angle had a significant effect on the detonation performance of the UHMWPE belt-net: the peak overload of the projectile head was the largest when the impact angle was 0° (normal impact), corresponding to the optimal detonation performance of the UHMWPE belt-net; when the impact angle increased to 67.5° or more, the detonation performance of the UHMWPE belt-net decreased significantly.
