An Analysis of Relationship among Social Media Avatar Presentation and Usage Motivation—Illustrated by the Example of WeChat Usage of University Students

      本文通过问卷调查,以实证的方法,分析了微信应用中大学生使用动机与头像呈现之间的关系。结果显示,大学生微信用户在头像选择上不愿透露过多真实信息,同时倾向于对照片进行修饰;娱乐性动机对选择非个人真实照片、经过修饰的照片、只露部分面部的大头照产生正向显著影响,对选择照片原图产生负向显著影响;扩新动机对选择个人真实照片、以自己为原型创作的照片、与朋友的合影、家人照片或与其合影、拍摄的照片原图、面部清晰的大头照及身体正面照产生正向显著影响;从众动机对选择身体侧面或背面照产生正向显著影响。
English Summary:
      This paper uses the method of empirical research, conducting a questionnaire survey to analyze the correlation between university students’ motivation of WeChat usage and avatar presentation. The result shows that university students are reluctant to overexpose their personal information and tend to beautify their photos in the process of avatar selection. The motivation of entertainment has significant positive impact on students" selection of unrealistic personal photos, modified photos or half-hidden selfie, but has negative effect on choosing original photos as avatar. The motivation of extending circle of friends has significant positive impact on selecting real personal photos, creative photos based on their own characteristic, families’ photos, photos taken with their friends or families, original photos, clear selfie and photos taken from the front of their bodies as avatar. The motivation of conformity has significant positive impact on selecting photos taken from side or back of their bodies as avatar.
